Audible Gesture is a performance system that explores the body as both controller and listener. Real-time body tracking is used to capture the motion of a dancer, with the position and velocity of individual body parts mapped to parameters in a custom patch built in VCV Rack, a modular synthesis environment.
As the dancer moves, their gestures modulate sound—altering pitch and rhythm in real time. The resulting audio is played back immediately, creating a closed feedback loop where the dancer responds to the sound they’ve just shaped.
The system dissolves clear boundaries between choreographer, performer, and instrument. It becomes a recursive composition of motion and sound, where movement and audio co-produce one another continuously.
Audible Gesture was presented in 2025 at Katapult Berlin with Berlin based dancer Madeline Robertson.
